Oregon lawmakers have decided minors should not be allowed in tanning salon beds.
The bill passed the Senate 16-13 Thursday. It now heads to Gov. John Kitzhaber, who says he will sign it.
The restriction applies to people under 18.
One exception was allowed: They can tan with a doctor’s note. An amendment to allow 17-year-olds to tan at a salon with a parent’s permission was dropped.
Supporters say tanning beds, like cigarettes, cause cancer and should be off-limits to minors. Opponents say parents, not the state, should decide if teens can use tanning beds.
